history
Alfons of Poitiers founded around 50 bastides in the area between 1256 and 1270, including one from which the municipality developed. It was built here in a strategically favorable position on the top of a narrow, elongated hill with steep slopes. The town center is traversed by two streets parallel to the hill line and has only one central square.
The village suffered a lot from the Huguenot Wars . Only one half-timbered house from the 16th or 17th century has survived the centuries. The other buildings date from the end of the 18th or beginning of the 19th century. In the 19th century the village became too narrow for the emerging economic activities and the community developed in a westerly direction, where, among other things, the Mairie and the school were built.
Many older houses have been converted into plants for the production of prunes , an economic focus in Agenais at the beginning of the 20th century. These were gradually abandoned in the course of the following industrialization.
In 1824 the municipality of Calliadelles was incorporated.
Population development
With the incorporation of Calliadelles, the population rose in the first half of the 19th century to a high of around 1,040. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 430 inhabitants during short recovery phases by the 1970s, before a phase of moderate growth set in, which stagnated again in recent years.
