City Hall ( Mairie ) of Condezaygues

Condezaygues is a French municipality with 854 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Villeneuve-sur-Lot and the canton of Le Fumélois (until 2015: canton of Fumel ).

There are at least two theories about the origin of the name of the community, both of which point to the geographical location on the banks of the Lot . One goes back to the Occitan words candas and aigas , which together mean "clear water". Another derivation is provided by the Celtic word Condezaïgues ( German  near the water ).

The inhabitants are called Condezayguais and Condezayguaises .

geography

Condezaygues is located about 20 km northeast of Villeneuve-sur-Lot in the catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) of Fumel in the historic province of Agenais on the northeastern edge of the department.

Condezaygues is surrounded by the five neighboring municipalities:

Monségur Neighboring communities Monsempron-Libos
Trentels Saint-Vite

Condezaygues is located in the Garonne river basin on the right bank of the Lot.

The Rech and the Pètre cross the territory of the municipality and there flow into the Lot. The Leyze, a tributary of the Lède , irrigates the northern municipality.

history

Archaeological excavations prove an early settlement of the area on the river Lot. Condezaygues is mentioned for the first time in 1271 when the inhabitants of Penne-d'Agenais paid homage to the French crown. The Fumel family owned most of the parish through the centuries. Another, more insignificant seigneurie in the parish area was called La Motte-Piis . It is connected to a weir and connected water mills on the Lot, which had been in operation since the 13th century. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, this seigneurie gradually passed into the hands of the Palazols, Folmont, Vassal, Marbotin families and finally to Pierre Fournier in 1782.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to an initial high of around 540 by the first half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 345 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1920s, before a phase of growth began showed strong growth especially after the Second World War . Since the 1980s, the number of residents has stabilized at a level of around 850.
