Douzains is a French municipality with 269 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Lot-et-Garonne in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Villeneuve-sur-Lot and the canton of Le Val du Dropt (until 2015: canton of Castillonnès ).
The name of the community goes back to the Occitan douz ( German source ).
The inhabitants are called Douzainois and Douzainois .
geography
Douzains is about 30 km northwest of Villeneuve-sur-Lot in the historic province of Agenais on the northern edge of the department.

Douzains is located in the catchment area of the Garonne River . The Douyne, a tributary of the Dropt , forms the natural border with the neighboring municipality of Castillonnès to the east. Its tributaries, the Rubital and the Douanel, cross the territory of the municipality.
history
High Middle Ages burial sites have been found in the hamlet of Cinq Chemins east of the center of the parish. They contained sarcophagi decorated with red ceramics.
The parish of Saint-Pierre-es-Dozens was first mentioned in the records in 1266. The Romanesque parish church dates from the 12th century and proves that the settlement existed earlier. A priory was mentioned from 1319 to 1365 , which was under the diocese of Sarlat until the French Revolution .
In 1789, the parishes of Douzains and Saint-Grégoire were incorporated into the parish of Lalandusse and regained their autonomy under the French consulate . In 1825, Saint-Grégoire was finally incorporated into Douzains.
Population development
With the incorporation of Saint-Grégoire, the number of inhabitants rose to a peak of around 735 in the mid-19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 195 inhabitants with short recovery phases until the 1980s, before a growth phase began. which continues today.
