The Giving Pledge ( English for The promise something to give away ) is a philanthropic campaign , which in June 2010 by billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffett has started. It is intended to encourage particularly wealthy people to donate their wealth for the common good .

The initiative stated on its official website that it is "an attempt to invite the richest people and families in America and the world to give most of their wealth to philanthropy ." Wealthy patrons from other parts of the world also joined the Giving Pledge like the German SAP founder Hasso Plattner , the African mobile phone entrepreneur Mo Ibrahim , the Indian entrepreneur Azim Premji , the British Virgin founder Richard Branson and the Russian internet entrepreneur Juri Milner .

history

Gates and Buffett were inspired by Andrew Carnegie 's 1889 essay, The Gospel of Wealth , for their initiative to get US billionaires to donate money to charity . After the start in June 2010, the idea received great support in the first eight weeks. In August 2010, 40 US billionaires pledged to donate at least half of their fortune to charity if possible, including New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and George Lucas , creator of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones series. In December 2010, 17 more billionaires such as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and then Karstadt investor Nicolas Berggruen joined them. By fall 2012, a total of 91 billionaire families had made the pledge. By February 1, 2014, the number of participating families rose to 122. On August 1, 2015, this number rose to 137.

Action

The initiative does not collect money from donors, it only calls on the billionaires to pledge to donate part of their wealth to charity. This can happen during their lifetime, immediately before or after their death. Buffett himself had already promised to donate 99 percent of his fortune to charitable foundations, the vast majority of the money to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation , which is the largest private foundation in the world based on its deposits.

According to Forbes Magazine , more than 400 billionaires live in the United States, which means that with the Giving Pledge in August 2010, around 10 percent of all US billionaires had already committed to the Gates and Buffett initiative.

According to "The Chronicle of Philanthropy", The Giving Pledge had no demonstrable impact on donation behavior until 2019, despite initial enthusiasm. Hedge fund manager and philanthropist Robert Wilson described The Giving as "practically worthless", especially since the wealth of foundations could remain under the control of the wealthy.
