Hamdi Ulukaya (* 1972 in İliç , Erzincan ) is an American entrepreneur and patron of Kurdish origin.

Life

Ulukaya grew up near the Turkish town of Erzincan . The family owned a flock of sheep and produced cheese and yogurt. In 1994 Hamdi Ulukaya came to the USA to learn English.

The yogurt he found in the United States didn't meet his expectations. He wanted to make yogurt as he knew it from his childhood. He used a loan to purchase a disused dairy in New York, state in 2005 . He called the company Chobani . In 2012, he opened the world's largest dairy in Twin Falls , Idaho . The main product is Chobani Flip , a product similar to Müller's yoghurt with the corner .

Right from the start, 10% of the profits through the Chobani Foundation were used for charity.

According to the Forbes 2019 list, his net worth is approximately $ 2 billion. This puts him in 1425 on the Forbes list of the richest people in the world.

Foundations

Ulukaya has the initiative The Giving Pledge of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett connected. In this attempt, the rich of the world undertake to spend a large part of their wealth on charitable purposes during their lifetime. Ulukaya focuses on the refugee crisis. This topic is closest to him biographically. He founded the “The Tent” foundation and recruits targeted refugees in his company. Almost one in three of his employees is a refugee.

In 2013 he was named “World Entrepreneur 2013” by management consultants at Ernst & Young .

In 2015 he received the Global Leadership Award from the United Nations Foundations.
