Alfred Kern (entrepreneur)
Alfred Kern (born December 24, 1850 in Bülach , † March 2, 1893 in Basel ) was a Swiss chemist ( dye chemistry ) and entrepreneur.
Life
Kern studied chemistry at the Zurich Polytechnic from 1868 to 1870 and then became an assistant to Johannes Wislicenus . From 1872 to 1878 he worked in the K. Oehler aniline and aniline paint factory in Offenbach am Main . During this time he received his doctorate in 1874 at the University of Giessen .
From 1879 he headed the triphenylmethane dyes department at Bindschedler & Busch (later Ciba ) in Basel. The company worked together with BASF , and in 1883 Kern and Heinrich Caro from BASF developed the dyes crystal violet and auramine .
In 1886 he founded with Edouard Constant Sandoz , a merchant, the company Sandoz .
