Thomas Fahr Steyer (born June 27, 1957 in New York City , New York , USA ) is an American fund manager , environmentalist and donor for the Democrats .

Career

Steyer grew up on the Upper East Side . He studied Politics and Economics ( Phi Beta Kappa ) at Yale before working as a banker for Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs . In 1986 he founded the hedge fund Farallon Capital , from which he withdrew in 2012 with an estimated net worth of US $ 1.6 billion to increase his political commitment.

Political commitment

Steyer is a longtime supporter of the Democrats. He already supported John Kerry in the election campaign against George W. Bush in 2004, advocated a greater role for the environment in politics, organized the resistance against the Keystone XL oil pipeline between Canada and the USA and founded the Next Generation America movement .

In 2017 he founded the “Need to Impeach” movement, which seeks impeachment proceedings against US President Donald Trump . For this initiative, Steyer toured the United States, gave speeches and organized events. After months of speculation, he declared in January 2019 that he would “currently” not run for the 2020 presidential election, but would continue to focus his energies on ending the Trump presidency. In a video on Twitter on July 9, 2019, Steyer announced that he would now run as the Democratic candidate for the 2020 election. He announced the withdrawal of his candidacy on February 29, 2020.

Private

He has been married to Kathryn Taylor since 1986 and has four children with her. The family now lives in San Francisco , near the Golden Gate Bridge . Steyer's father, Roy Henry Steyer, was a prosecutor at the Nuremberg war crimes trials .
