Patrick Soon-Shiong (born July 29, 1952 in Port Elizabeth , South Africa ) is a South African - American entrepreneur and surgeon .

Life

His Chinese parents are from Taishan in Guangdong and fled to South Africa during World War II. Soon-Shiong studied at the University of Witwatersrand , the University of British Columbia, and the University of California at Los Angeles Medicine & Surgery. He is a professor at the University of California at Los Angeles and specializes in cancer research . Among other things, he succeeded in discovering active ingredients for better treatment of breast cancer . In 1991 he founded the pharmaceutical company Abraxis BioScience , which he sold to the US company Celgene in 2010 , and in 1997 he founded the pharmaceutical company American Pharmaceutical Partners (APP). He sold the latter company in 2008 to the German company Fresenius Kabi . Soon-Shiong also established the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation . Soon-Shiong is married to actress Michele B. Chan and has two children.

Patrick Soon-Shiong has owned the Los Angeles Times newspaper and the San Diego Union-Tribune since February 2018 . Soon-Shiong paid $ 500 million for it.
