William Albert Ackman , mostly just Bill Ackman (born May 11, 1966 ) is an American hedge fund manager. He sees himself as an activist investor .

Life

origin

Bill Ackman grew up in Chappaqua , Westchester County , New York. His father, Lawrence David Ackman, was the chairman of Ackman Brothers & Singer, a real estate investment firm in New York. Bill Ackman studied history at Harvard University . He graduated magna cum laude in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts in history. He then did his Master of Business Administration at Harvard Business School and received his MBA in 1992. Ackman is now on the Advisory Board of Harvard Law School .

Bill Ackman's Jewish grandfather was born in Ukraine . In the 1890s, at the age of 17, he walked from there to Austria, where he trained as a tailor. From Hamburg he then crossed over to New York. He set up a textile factory in Staten Island .

Ackman was married to landscape architect Karen Ann Herskovitz for 25 years . From this marriage three daughters were born. In January 2019, Ackman married MIT Media Lab professor and former Israeli Air Force soldier Neri Oxman.

Career

Pershing Square Capital Management

2004 founded Ackman 54 million US dollars , the hedge fund management company Pershing Square Capital Management . Ackman tries to force corporate decisions through influence. So he publicly criticized the business concepts of Herbalife and MBIA and thus caused the course to fall. At Allergan he called for the resignation of the CEO and supported the takeover by Valeant .

Ackman was involved in founding Special-Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) Justice Holdings , which merged with Burger King .
