Brian Chesky (born August 29, 1981 ) is an American entrepreneur . He is co-founder and CEO of Airbnb and was named by Time to the list of "100 Most Influential People of 2015".

Career

Brian Chesky grew up in Niskayuna , New York. His parents were both social workers. He was interested in art and design from an early age. In 1999 he finally began studying at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He graduated in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in industrial design . During his time at RISD he met Joe Gebbia, with whom he later founded Airbnb.

Career

After graduating, Chesky worked for 2 years as a product designer at 3DID, Inc. in Los Angeles. In June 2007 Joe Gebbia convinced him to move to San Francisco. The two shared an apartment. In October 2007, the Industrial Designers Society of America held a conference in San Francisco and the hotel rooms were practically all booked. Since they were struggling to pay their rent, they decided to sublet their apartment for conference guests. They put three air mattresses in the living room and marketed their idea as "Airbed and Breakfast".

In February 2008, engineer Nathan Blecharczyk , a former roommate of Gebbia, joined Airbnb as the third co-founder. The trio was eventually accepted into Y Combinator 's startup incubation program and received start-up funding of $ 20,000 in January 2009.

After a vandalism incident in San Francisco, Chesky announced the establishment of a 24-hour hotline and a US $ 50,000 host guarantee on behalf of the company in 2011. This was later increased to $ 1 million. In 2015, Chesky announced that Airbnb is an official sponsor and partner of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro . He also announced that two years earlier, during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, more than 120,000 people stayed in Airbnb accommodations.
