Jon Meade Huntsman Sr. (born June 21, 1937 in Blackfoot , Idaho , † February 2, 2018 in Salt Lake City , Utah ) was an American industrialist .

Huntsman was the founder of the Huntsman Corporation and a member of the Forbes 500. His last residence was near Salt Lake City , Utah .

Huntsman, Sr., grew up in poverty in Idaho and California , studied at the Wharton School on scholarships , worked as a White House clerk in the President Richard Nixon- led era, and worked for Dow Chemical before starting his own company.

Huntsman Sr. made generous donations to charitable and academic causes, not least to the benefit of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. In addition to the current main building of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania , the Huntsman Program in International Studies and Business and the Jon M. Huntsman Center, the main arena of the University of Utah, were named after him. He was a member of The Mormon Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .

His eldest son, Jon Huntsman Jr. , was the governor of Utah from 2004 to 2009 .
