HF Lenfest

HF Lenfest , called "Gerry", (born May 29, 1930 in Jacksonville , Florida ; † August 5, 2018 ) was an American media entrepreneur and philanthropist .

He grew up in New York and New Jersey, graduated from the Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg (Pennsylvania) and then studied at Washington and Lee University (BA 1953). After serving in the US Navy , Lenfest graduated from Columbia Law School ( LL.B. 1958).

He first worked for Davis Polk & Wardwell, then for Walter Annenberg's media company Triangle Publications . He began building his own cable television company, Lenfest Communications , in the 1970s and sold it to AT&T in 1999 . The LGL Partners family office emerged from this transaction .

Lenfest has donated more than US $ 100 million to its alma mater Columbia alone . Together with his wife Marguerite, Lenfest was one of the signatories of The Giving Pledge campaign . In 2004 he was admitted to the American Philosophical Society .
