Bernie Marcus (born 1929 in Newark , New Jersey ) is an American entrepreneur .

Life

Marcus comes from a Jewish family. He studied pharmacy at Rutgers University . Together with Arthur Blank , Ron Brill and Pat Farrah he founded The Home Depot . From 1979 to 1997 he headed the company. Marcus is married and has three children. He lives with his family in Atlanta , Georgia .

Supported and largely funded by a US $ 250 million donation, Marcus owned the Georgia Aquarium , which was built on 81,000 square meters north of Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta. Marcus had the idea for an aquarium in Atlanta in 1990 at a reception at the Monterey Bay Aquarium on the occasion of his 60th birthday.
