TAG ( T ext- A dventure- G enerator ) is an authoring system for creating German-language text adventures . It contains its own programming language in which the user writes his text adventure. The program then creates the game file from this, which can be played with the T.AM (Text Adventure Machine) interpreter .

Among the authors of German-language text adventures, TAG was a popular alternative to the leading development tool Inform in the 1990s . The trade magazine Textfire rated the authoring system as being beginner-friendly , but unsuitable for complex projects.

TAG is freeware , but not free software : it can be freely distributed free of charge, but the source code , for example, is not public. It was developed by Martin Oehm, is available for MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows and can also be used under Linux using emulators . The further development was stopped in 2005. The source file is a simple ASCII file that contains the definitions of the rooms, objects, commands, etc.
