Bayern ticket

The Bayern ticket is a ticket offering of Deutsche Bahn AG from the family of regional tickets . The offer, introduced in 1997, allows the use of all regional trains (including S-Bahn) in Bavaria . In addition to the normal Bayern ticket for second class, there are also the variants Bayern ticket 1st class , Bayern ticket night and Bayern ticket night 1st class .

A fundamentally new price system has been in effect since June 10, 2012, in which the number of passengers must be determined before buying the ticket. The system was transformed from a two-part to a five-part system. A group 1st class ticket has also been introduced for the change.

With around 73.5 million tickets sold by mid-2020, the Bayern Ticket is Germany's most successful national ticket. By mid-2017, around 130 million travelers had covered a total of 17 billion kilometers.

Conditions

The Bayern-Ticket is valid on all local trains of the Deutsche Bahn (IRE, RE, RB and S-Bahn) as well as the trains of the private railways, which are members of the tariff association of the federal and non-federal railways in Germany (TBNE), as well as on the means of transport of the transport associations (Subway, light rail, tram, city and regional buses) and other regional buses.

It is available in the following versions (as of December 18, 2019):

  • The Bayern ticket costs 26 euros for one person. Each additional passenger pays 8 euros. It costs 34 euros for two people, 42 euros for three people, 50 euros for four people and 58 euros for five people. Any number of children / grandchildren under the age of 15 can be taken along free of charge. Then a maximum of two adults can travel with one ticket (26 euros for one parent, 34 euros with an additional adult passenger).
  • The Bayern ticket, 1st class, costs 38.50 euros for one person. Each additional passenger pays 20.50 euros. For two people it costs 59 euros, for three people 79.50 euros, for four people 100 euros and for five people 120.50 euros.
  • The Bayern-Ticket Nacht costs 24 euros for one person, each additional passenger pays 5 euros. For two people it costs 29 euros, for three people 34 euros, for four people 39 euros and for five people 44 euros.
  • The Bayern-Ticket 1st class night costs 35.50 euros for one person, each additional passenger pays 16.50. For two people it costs 52 euros, for three people 68.50 euros, for four people 85 euros and for five people 101.50 euros.

The prices quoted apply to purchases from DB ticket machines, in DB service stores and on the Internet. A surcharge of two euros is levied for purchases in DB travel centers and travel agencies with a DB license; when ordering by telephone via the DB service hotline, a surcharge of 3.50 euros is levied. The Bayern-Ticket is also available at stationary and mobile ticket machines of the private railways in Bavaria if they are a member of the tariff association of the federal and non-federal railways in Germany (TBNE). Various organizers grant discounts for Bayern ticket holders. In the spring of 2005, more than 100 partners offered discounts on presentation of the Bayern ticket. Since June 10, 2012, bahn.bonus points can also be acquired when purchasing .

All travelers must enter their first and last name either online or indelibly in block letters in the column provided, because the Bayern-Ticket is only valid with name entries and if it can be shown at the ticket inspection in conjunction with official photo identification (identity card or passport). Until the boarding of passengers boarding en route, the name fields can remain empty on printed tickets, because those boarding must first enter their name "[...] immediately after boarding [...]". There are no regulations on the order in which names are entered on the ticket.

Since June 10, 2012, boarding of the individual group members has been possible at all subway stations.

Larger dogs count as passengers and are charged as an adult. A paying dog must be entered on the Bayernticket mit Hund instead of a traveler.

Spatial scope

The Bayern-Ticket has been valid on all railway lines in Bavaria since its introduction. In order to connect important neighboring stations or to enable alternative routes, the spatial scope was gradually expanded. On August 1, 1997, the route from Neu-Ulm via Ulm Hbf to Thalfingen, Unter- and Oberelchingen was included so that these Bavarian " exclaves " could use the ticket. On July 1, 1999 the area of ​​validity was extended to the Austrian train stations Kufstein and Salzburg Hbf as well as the line leading through Baden-Württemberg from Memmingen via Kißlegg to Hergatz . Since April 1, 2008, customers have been able to travel to and from Sonneberg in Thuringia with the Bayern Ticket . Crailsheim and Lauda (Lauda-Königshofen) in Baden-Württemberg and Jossa (Sinntal) in Hesse can also be reached with the ticket . The Ausserfernbahn can also be used on the Austrian section between Griesen and Pfronten-Steinach.

Price development for Bayern tickets

The offer was introduced on March 3, 1997 on the initiative of the Free State of Bavaria. For 35 D-Mark families or two adults could use all local trains, regional trains as well as city and regional express trains in Bavaria. Travel between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. were excluded. For a surcharge of 20 D-Marks, Interregio and express trains could also be used in Bavaria. The main aim of the offer was to improve the capacity utilization of the trains in off-peak times. The Munich S-Bahn was also excluded. According to the then Minister of Economics Wiesheu , the Munich transport association responsible for this initially wanted to wait for the new ticket to be successful.

After a test phase until July 1997, the final version of the ticket should be presented before the summer holidays. The offer was originally limited to the end of the year. According to the company, Deutsche Bahn sold an average of 800 tickets per working day. At the end of October 1997 it was announced that the offer would be offered beyond the trial phase. The Bavarian Ministry of Transport advocated enabling use during rush hour. The Munich S-Bahn should also be included in the offer.

In April 1998 the area of ​​validity was extended to the Munich S-Bahn and U-Bahn as well as all Deutsche Bahn means of transport in the VGN and the Augsburg and Würzburg areas. The price was unchanged at 35 D-Marks, the ticket was valid Monday to Friday.

On December 26, 1999, the offer was extended to five adults, the price was raised from 35 to 40 D-Marks.

In March 2000, 60,000 Bayern tickets were given away to travelers as compensation for problems with the Munich S-Bahn in the previous winter.

In July 2000, Deutsche Bahn rejected the request from the Bavarian Ministry of Transport and the Bavarian Railway Company to abolish the afternoon blocking time (4 to 6 p.m.) after state tickets were introduced in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland without an exclusion time in the afternoon. The afternoon blocking period was finally lifted when the timetable changed in June 2001.

In September 2003 the Bayern ticket was sold for 21 euros, in July 2004 it was 22 euros.

From 2004, Bayern tickets were available for journeys on Saturday and Sunday. In August 2004 the scope was extended to the Würzburg transport association . At the end of 2004 the price of the ticket was increased.

With the timetable change on December 11, 2005, the validity was extended to numerous public bus routes in Bavaria and the price of the ticket increased from 24 to 25 euros. The only exception among the more than 400 transport companies that were persuaded by DB Regio Bayern in negotiations to recognize the ticket was initially the Schweinfurt transport company. Other exceptions are cross-border bus services and offers subject to tolls (for example in Reit im Winkl ).

Since April 1, 2010, the Bayern-Ticket can also be issued as an online ticket . Since then, dogs have also been considered traveling with the group and night variants of the ticket.

Since August 1, 2010, the Bayern tickets have also been valid for the Schweinfurt public transport company (Stadtwerke Schweinfurt).

With the timetable change in December 2016, the price of the Bayern ticket (for one person traveling alone) was raised from 23 to 25 euros.

"Tractor"

The obligation since December 15, 2013 that all names (instead of only one, as was previously the case) were entered, was a reaction to the misuse of the ticket by “smugglers”: after a traveler with a group had taken a legal trip, kept he got the ticket and looked for new (supposed) passengers. Since an exchange of passengers on the Bayern ticket was (and is) excluded, the “tug” pretended to the passengers that they could legally ride with him. In fact, the new passengers drove without a valid ticket and were sometimes obliged to pay an increased fare. Because the "tugs" and not the railway received the amount paid by the passengers, the railway suffered damage that, according to their statements, amounted to between 430,000 and 1.38 million euros. At the beginning of August 2014, a spokesman for the railway stated that after the information campaign and the introduction of the obligation to enter all names, the railway now had the problem of tugs "under control".

Other variants

Bayern ticket single

With the timetable change in December 2003, the cheaper Bayern-Ticket Single was introduced. For 15 euros, one person traveled on the same terms as the Bayern ticket. The single variant was introduced under pressure from the Bavarian Ministry of Transport in negotiations about the transport contract (which was extended over ten years in September 2003). By the beginning of March 2004, more than 200,000 Bayern single tickets were sold, and by mid-2004 899,000.

When the timetable changed on December 11, 2005, the price was increased to 18 euros.

On April 1, 2010, a first-class variant was introduced at a price of 30 euros. The price in 2nd class was 20 euros.

When the price system was changed on June 10, 2012, the Bayern-Ticket Single was no longer available. Since then, all variants of Bayern tickets have been valid for one person. A surcharge has to be paid for each additional passenger.

Bayern ticket night

With the timetable change on December 11, 2005, the Bayern-Ticket Nacht was introduced as an additional offer. The Bayern-Ticket Nacht is currently valid from Sunday to Thursday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, on the nights before Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays in Bavaria and on August 15, 24 and 31 December until 7 a.m. the following day. The current price is 23 euros for one person and three euros per passenger.

Bavaria-Bohemia ticket

The Bavaria-Böhmen-Ticket is available for trips to border areas in the Czech Republic . The same conditions apply for this as for the regular Bayern ticket, in addition, its area of ​​validity in the Czech Republic extends from Tanvald near the Polish border via Reichenberg , Aussig an der Elbe , Leitmeritz , Komotau , Karlsbad , Marienbad , Pilsen , Budweis to after Krumau near the Austrian border. It applies in the Czech Republic to express (EX), express (R), express (Sp) and passenger trains (Os) of the České dráhy within the area of ​​validity.

As with the Bayern-Ticket, the price system for the Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket was changed on June 10, 2012. The first person pays 26 euros, the second to fifth person pays an additional 5.60 euros each. The ticket is only offered for 2nd class.

Before the system change, it cost 34 euros, in the single version 24 euros.

Werdenfels regional ticket

For trips in the region Werdenfelser Land is Regio ticket Werdenfels offered. Similar conditions apply to this as for the regular Bayern ticket, only the area of ​​validity is limited to the regions of Munich , Tutzing , Kochel , Oberammergau and Mittenwald and to the Ausserfernbahn from Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Reutte to Pfronten-Ried . The start and destination stations may not be within the same transport association. The first person pays 22 euros, the second to fifth pay an additional 6 euros each. The ticket is only offered for 2nd class.

Southeast Bavaria ticket

The Südostbayern-Ticket is a regional offer in the Munich-Passau-Landshut-Rosenheim-Freilassing area, which is valid for the same time period as the Bayern-Ticket on selected routes of the Südostbayern-Bahn, Meridian and ÖBB PV AG for one to five People in the first or second car class applies.

Sales figures

In 1997, 335,000 Bayern tickets were sold. In 1998 around 627,000 were sold, in 1999 the number was 866,000. In 2003 1.47 million passengers were counted. In the first half of 2004, 645,808 units of the 22 euro variant were sold. In 2004, 1.6 million Bayern tickets and almost two million Bayern single tickets were sold. In the first four months of 2005, demand increased by a further 15 percent year-on-year. In 2005, the number of Bayern tickets sold was 1.7 million.

At the end of March 2006, the ten millionth Bayern ticket was sold. It is, according to Deutsche Bahn, the best-selling national ticket in Germany. On average, three travelers are traveling with the ticket. By mid-June 2010, a total of 30 million copies of all Bayern ticket variants had been sold, including 17.5 million copies of the classic variant.

With more than four million Bayern tickets sold (including 1.9 million Bayern tickets single), a new sales record was set in 2010.

Just 16 years after its introduction, 100 million Bayern ticket travelers were counted by October 2013. This makes the ticket the most successful national ticket from Deutsche Bahn.

Due to the success of the ticket and as a colorful advertising measure, a DB class 218 locomotive was finally painted in a special design and presented to the public in 2013.

50 million Bayern tickets had been sold by mid-2014.
