Ronny Ziesmer

Ronny Ziesmer (born July 26, 1979 in Groß Oßnig , Cottbus-Land district , GDR ) is a former German gymnast and sports soldier .

Ziesmer from Cottbus celebrated his first sporting successes at the European Gymnastics Championships in 2002 when he finished fifth with the German national team.

In 2003 he became German champion in the all-around competition . At the German Championships in Chemnitz in 2004 , he won the runner-up and thus qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens . Ziesmer was one of the broader favorites on the rings.

Ziesmer was a staff sergeant in the Bundeswehr and belonged to the Stuttgart sports promotion group.

During a training jump in preparation for the Olympic Games, Ziesmer had a serious accident on July 12, 2004 in Kienbaum, Brandenburg . After a double backflip (a tsukahara with an additional whole twist) at the horse jump , he hit his head on the ground. He broke his cervical spine at the level of the 5th and 6th cervical vertebrae. Since then, he has been paraplegic in the form of a quadriplegia , as both arms and legs are affected by the paralysis. He can now move his arms to a limited extent again.

Ziesmer, who now lives in Cottbus again, studied biotechnology at the Lausitz University of Applied Sciences from 2005 to 2011 .

At the suggestion of Ronny Ziesmer, the German Paraplegia Foundation (DSQ) set up a trust foundation in 2006 under the name "German Paraplegia Foundation - Alliance of Hope (DSQA)".

In 2008 Ziesmer commented on the all- around competition as co-commentator for ZDF at the Olympic Games in Beijing . Also in 2012 at the Olympic Games in London and at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 he was a co-commentator on gymnastics for ZDF. He has been active as a handbiker since 2008 and reached the finish line in the 2011 Berlin Marathon after 2:01:49. In 2018 he took part in the European Para-Athletics Championships with a club.
