The Athletic Association of Small States of Europe (AASSE) is the athletics association of small states in Europe. Only states with fewer than one million inhabitants can become members. All corresponding states are currently members with the exception of the Vatican State , which does not take part in international athletics competitions.

After the competition rules had been drawn up, the member associations of the AASSE decided in 1993 at the IAAF Congress in Stuttgart to propose that the EAA participate as a team in the "Bruno Zauli Cup" in 1994.

AASSE was officially founded during the EAA Congress in Venice in 1994 in the presence of President Carl-Olaf Homén . The deed of incorporation was signed by the representatives of Andorra , Cyprus , Iceland , Liechtenstein , Luxembourg , Malta and San Marino .

At the EAA Congress in Venice, the participation of a combined AASSE team in the “Bruno Zauli Cup” ( European Athletics Cup 1994 ) in Dublin was accepted. Monaco became a member of AASSE in 2000 and Montenegro in 2006. Gibraltar has been the tenth member since at least 2015 .
