Paul Kerschbaum winery
The Paul Kerschbaum winery is an Austrian winery based in Horitschon in the Mittelburgenland wine-growing region.
history
In 1988 Paul Kerschbaum, who had originally aspired to the career of a professional musician, decided to take over the business successor in his grandparents' winery. After graduating from the viticulture school in Eisenstadt, he pushed the adaptation of the vineyard, which then comprised seven hectares of vineyards, to the requirements of a contemporary economy. He began filling bottles as early as 1989 and built a barrel and tank cellar including a fermentation room. As a result of its economic success, a few years later it was necessary to build a new bottle warehouse and a larger filling room. In the second half of the 1990s, Kerschbaum had a barrique cellar built with a capacity of 450 barriques . A few years later, the cellar proved to be too small, which is why structural adjustments were necessary again in 2001. Since this expansion of the company, it has been possible for Kerschbaum to store its premium wines for longer in order to only bring them onto the market after they have been appropriately bottle-aged. In September 2014 the new representative office of the winery was opened on the outskirts of Horitschon.
Shortly after Paul Kerschbaum started working in the family business, there was success. In 2001 he was named “A la Carte Winemaker of the Year”, in 2003 he received the “ Vinaria Trophy” and after a number of other awards, in 2007 he was named “Winemaker of the Year” by Falstaff . In the Falstaff Wine Guide 2013, Paul Kerschbaum is referred to in retrospect as one of the “master builders” among the successful red wine growers in Central Burgenland.
Paul Kerschbaum's son, Michael Kerschbaum, has been responsible for the vinification since 2011, but the final vote is still carried out with the participation of Paul Kerschbaum. The Paul Kerschbaum winery is a member of the "Renowned Wineries Burgenland" (RWB).
Vineyards, varieties, wines
The vineyards planted exclusively with red grape varieties are 33 hectares (as of 2014). The famous Horitschon locations Dürrau and Hochäcker belong to the cultivation area. Pure Blaufränkisch pigs come from these locations . The premium wines include the "Blaufränkisch Dürrau", the "Cuvée Impresario" from Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt , Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as the "Cuvée Kerschbaum" from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Blaufränkisch, which has been in the range since 1999. The pure bottled 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon, which Austrian wine experts regularly raved about, achieved a legendary reputation. In a comparative tasting with high-ranking Austrian and international competitors in 2006, the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon from Kerschbaum proved its longevity.
