The European Athletics Association (dt .: " European Athletics Association ") (EAA), often called European Athletics called, is the European branch of the World Association of Athletics Federations World Athletics . The association currently has 50 athletics associations.

history

During a meeting of the IAAF in Los Angeles in 1932, a special committee of the council was charged with examining the requirements for organizing European championships. In a meeting on September 24, 1933 in Berlin, the IAAF Council decided to found a European committee with Szilard Stankovits as president. The first meeting took place in Budapest on January 7, 1934 , with the first European championships being held in Turin in 1934 .

The European committee was elected by all IAAF members at regularly held congresses until 1966, and it gradually took over the organization of other competitions.

At a formal meeting on November 1, 1969 in Bucharest , the Association of European Members of the IAAF was formed. Their statutes were confirmed at an IAAF congress in Stockholm in August 1970 and came into force at the first EAA congress on November 7, 1970.

The EAA consists of the national athletics federations of Europe, which are also members of the IAAF. Only associations known to the IAAF can apply for membership and must then be confirmed by the IAAF at an EAA congress.

Inner organization

The EAA consists of:

  • the Congress, whose members represent the legislative force and supreme authority of the EAA within the rules of the IAAF,
  • the Council, which is responsible for the implementation of the decisions of the Congress and is made up of
    • the president,
    • two vice presidents,
    • the treasurer,
    • the general manager (ex officio),
    • the President of the IAAF as (ex officio)
    • and 13 other members; the term of office is four years.
  • the committees, the commissions and the working groups, as well as
  • the office.

The EAA Congress, which takes place in April every odd year, consists of the Council and the delegates of the members, each member having one vote. The elections are held at the ordinary congresses.

The board consists of the president, the vice-presidents, the general secretary and the treasurer, who represents the EAA from the right.

The European calendar conference, attended by delegates from members and clubs, is held every year in October or November and adopts a schedule according to which athletics events are planned.

The EAA's self-set goals are, according to its own statements, for B. the preservation and development of friendly and loyal cooperation between all members in the sense of athletics, peace and understanding in Europe as well as the control of all technological, administrative and financial matters in Europe according to the rules of the IAAF. In addition, the EAA wants to promote ethical values ​​in sport and take action against all forms of doping as well as racist , religious , political and other forms of discrimination . Attention is also drawn to the holding of all European championships and other athletics events in Europe.
