Alim Qasımov
Alim Qasımov (* 1957 in Şamaxı ) is an Azerbaijani singer of the mugham and internationally the best-known representative of this classical style.
Qasımov has sung mugham since childhood, but worked in agriculture and as a truck driver until he was nineteen, before embarking on a professional musical career. From 1978 to 1982 he studied at the Asaf Zeynalli Music College and then until 1989 at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Art . His teacher was the mugham singer Ağaxan Abdullayev . During this time he also learned the folk style of the Aşık Barden.
In 1988 he won first prize at the International Competition and Symposium for Traditional Music in Samarkand. He performed in the Heydar Əliyev Palace and the Concert Hall of the Azerbaijani Philharmonic and was a soloist at the Azerbaijani Opera and Ballet Theater from 1989 . In 1999 he was awarded the IMC UNESCO Music Prize. He received the highest artistic distinction in Azerbaijan as Artist of the People and Living National Treasure .
The typical instrumental accompaniment in mugham consists of the frame drum gaval ( däf ), the long-necked lute tar and the stinging fiddle kamantsche . The long-standing core members of Alim Qasımov's group are the brothers Malik Mansurov (tar) and Elşan Mansurov ( Kamantsche ) . Occasionally the short oboe balaban , the flute tütək , a clarinet (Klarnet) or the double-headed frame drum nağara are added.
He recorded 12 albums in Europe and the USA, including Love's Deep Ocean in 1999 with his daughter Fərqanə Qasımova . He also works with Yo-Yo Mas Silk Road Ensemble and the Kronos Quartet .
