The Morgenland Festival Osnabrück is dedicated to the music scene in the Near and Middle East . The festival has been held annually in various venues in the city of Osnabrück since 2005 . Since 2011, the 10-day festival has been alternated with a 4-day interlude in uneven years . In addition to musical performances from traditional to contemporary music from the region, alternative cultural genres such as visual arts , dance and theater or interdisciplinary projects are part of the festival program.

history

The festival was first held in 2005. The initiator and founder of the festival is Michael Dreyer, who still directs the festival today. It has set itself the task of questioning the traditional ideas of the " Orient ". It offers the participating artists time and space in which to realize projects. The musical program is therefore not imported as a finished product , but mostly developed on site.

In addition to well-known artists such as Alim Qasimov (Azerbaijan), Jivan Gasparyan (Armenia), the NDR Bigband or Salman Gambarov (Azerbaijan), musicians from Iran , Iraq , Syria , Pakistan , Lebanon , Israel , Egypt and Azerbaijan, still unknown in the West, have performed since 2005 , Xinjiang and Turkey . A highlight of the festival were guest performances by the Tehran Symphony Orchestra with works by Persian composers, but also by Beethoven , Tchaikovsky and Frank Zappa - and the Osnabrück Symphony Orchestra in Tehran , as well as a performance of Bach's St. John Passion by the Osnabrück Youth Choir in Tehran.

The Morgenland Chamber Orchestra has been a permanent fixture at the festival since 2009 : German musicians work with musicians from the host countries to develop a common repertoire , which is performed with changing soloists at the opening. The orchestra was conducted by Nader Mashayekhi (Iran) and Kinan Azmeh (Syria).

A second project with a permanent ensemble will start at the 2012 Festival on August 25th with the Morgenland All Star Band. The band brings together well-known soloists from the guest countries of recent years.

Another integral part of the festival is the annual exchange between students from the Osnabrück Music and Art School with students from the Barenboim-Said Conservatory Nazareth . The students spend a week in the other country and work on a joint program that will be performed at the end of the festival.
