The warehouse in Osnabrück is one of the communal cultural centers founded in Germany in the 1970s . It was set up in 1976 in the building of the former Richter Eisenwarengesellschaft, in the immediate vicinity of the Felix Nussbaum House and Waterloo Gate in the historic old town of Osnabrück. It is operated as a socio-cultural center by a non-profit association on behalf of the city , financed by income from the in-house catering and public grants. According to the operator, around 500 events take place in the warehouse every year. She is the organizer of the Osnabrück Cabaret Festival and the Morgenland Festival Osnabrück .

history

In 1972 the hardware wholesaler Richter relocated its warehouse from the old town of Osnabrück to a nearby industrial area . At the end of 1973 a citizens' initiative was formed consisting of artists, those interested in art and artisans who developed a concept for the use of the "Richter Lagerhaus" as a communication center and artist house. The citizens' initiative presented the concept to the city administration in February 1974, talks were held with Osnabrück's then mayor Ernst Weber about the city's possible acquisition of the house. The purchase price demanded by the Richter family was 550,000 DM, and they also stipulated that the future use of the house would not contradict the character of the Heger-Tor district. As the proposal to use the warehouse for the leisure area met with approval from both the administration and the members of the council, a concept was developed for the further use of the house. After the citizens' initiative had submitted the usage proposals to the administrative committee, the concept was positively discussed in the culture committee in November. On December 23, 1974, the city of Osnabrück acquired the building for 465,000 DM. Within 18 months, the former warehouse was expanded into a cultural center. The city made the premises available and assumed the running costs. However, she left the program design and, as far as possible, the division of the staff to the warehouse association that emerged from the citizens' initiative.

In 1979, the Osnabrück warehouse was a co-founder of the Federal Association of Sociocultural Centers .
