Nader Mashayekhi (born November 26, 1958 in Tehran ) is an Iranian composer and conductor.

The son of the actor Jamshid Mashayekhi trained in piano and composition at the Tehran Conservatory. In 1978 he went to Vienna and studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts until 1987 composition with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati , conducting with Richard Oesterreicher and electroacoustic music with Dieter Kaufmann .

In 1989 he founded the Ensemble Wien in 2001 (today: Ensemble Wien 21st Century ), which in its programs confronts historical and advanced contemporary works. He was also involved in multimedia projects such as exposé for ensemble with video projections and the multimedia opera Malakut by Andrea Zschunke based on a novella by Bahrem Sadeghi (1997).

In 1998 he returned to Iran for the first time to take over the direction of the Tehran Symphony Orchestra. The listening habits of the Iranian audience turned out to be problematic, as they saw music as an interactive event and did not know how to passively record (classical) music. Therefore Mashayekhi went back to Vienna. In 2007 he then founded the Young Philharmonic Orchestra Tehran in Tehran , with which he has performed works by John Cage , Arvo Pärt and Morton Feldman , among others .

As a composer, Mashayekhi is influenced by his teacher Haubenstock-Ramati, in particular through the expansion of the notation of his works with unconventional elements such as stylized Persian characters. In 2020 he was honored for his life's work at the 35th Fajr Music Festival . Mashayekhi is married to the Austrian flautist Gisela Mashayekhi-Beer .
