Ust-Dscheguta ( Russian Усть-Джегута́ ) is a city in the North Caucasian republic of Karachay-Cherkessia in Russia with 30,566 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus about 15 km south of the republic capital Cherkessk on the right bank of the Kuban at the mouth of the Dscheguta River . The Kuban is dammed up above the city to the small Ust-Dschegutinsker dam , which feeds the Great Stavropol Canal , which branches off here and is used for irrigation .

Ust-Dscheguta is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

The city is connected to Cherkessk and the main route of the North Caucasus Railway ( Zelenchuk station ) via a 67-kilometer branch line. The city's station is called Dscheguta .

history

The place was established in 1861 as Stanitsa Ust-Dschegutinskaja by Cossacks , who moved here from the lower reaches of the Kuban, and received city rights in 1975. The name is derived from the Russian word ustje for estuary and the Karachay words dschoge ( linden tree ) and tei ( river ).

Ust-Dscheguta is the center of the building materials industry: factories for precast reinforced concrete parts, cement, lime and silicate bricks are located here.
