Supernova 2018 took place from February 3 to February 24, 2018 and was the Latvian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon ( Portugal ). The winner was Laura Rizzotto with her self-written song Funny Girl .
format
concept
On August 30, 2017, the public television company Latvijas Televīzija (LTV) announced that the Supernova preliminary decision in 2018 would again be used to determine the interpreter and the song for the ESC. On December 6th, LTV announced that 21 participants would take part in the preliminary round. Unlike in the previous three years, there will be three semi-finals and one final in 2018. In 2015, 2016 and 2017 there were two heats , a semi-final and a final. In addition, there is the change that only two participants from the three semi-finals will qualify for the final. In addition, two wildcards will be given out after the three semi-finals. Thus, eight participants will compete against each other in the final. 50% of the voting process is determined by televoting and 50% by jury voting. Unlike in other preliminary rounds, however, the interpreter with the lowest number of points wins. This applies to the three semi-finals as well as the final.
Choice of contribution
Contributions could be submitted to LTV from September 6th, 10:00 a.m. to October 15th, 2017, 11:59 p.m. In a press release, LTV announced that they were looking for modern pop songs that could assert themselves in the international market. In addition, the candidates should have charisma, also in order to be able to build an international career. In addition, there will be rule changes for the 2018 entry election. Only 30% of the composers of a song may come from abroad. In addition, a songwriter camp was organized to write contributions for the preliminary round.
After LTV announced that they received 93 songs, they were shortened to 63 songs. These were to be evaluated in a worldwide online voting with a like (positive evaluation) and a dislike (negative evaluation). You could listen to all the songs from October 29 to November 5, 2017, even if the performer remained anonymous. On November 3rd, LTV announced that a total of 152 082 votes had been received. Of these, 41,946 were likes and 110,136 were dislikes . This system should help the jury to select the contributions that will end up in the programs.
In the next phase of the selection process, internally selected candidates presented themselves to a jury. These performances took place live in front of an audience on November 5, 2017 in the Alfa Park shopping center in Riga .
On November 9, 2017, LTV announced that the candidates for the programs had been selected.
Attendees
On December 6, 2017, LTV announced the 21 participants in Supernova 2018. Among them was Markus Riva, who already participated in 2015, 2016 and 2017, i.e. in all previous editions of Supernova. Also Aminata Savadogo that Latvia in 2015 represented Latvia and song in 2016 wrote, returned as a composer supernova.

A few days later, however, LTV announced that there had been a technical error when counting the votes in the second semi-final, so that Markus Riva initially did not qualify for the final, from which he would have come second after correcting the votes. As a result, LTV admitted both participants to the final.
