The Texelstroom is a ferry that went into service in 2016 and operates between Texel and Den Helder .

history

The ferry , which was ordered in May 2014 , was built for the Teso shipping company by the Spanish shipyard Construcciones Navales del Norte (LaNaval) in Bilbao . The ship, built as a double-ended ferry , was transferred from Spain to Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam in Amsterdam in April 2016 . The final expansion took place here. The ship was handed over to the shipping company on June 18, 2016 and put into service in September 2016. The shipping company operated a ferry of the same name from 1966 to 1992. Texelstroom , which cost around EUR 60 million, replaced the Schulpengat ferry , which was taken out of service.

The 135.40 meter long and 27.90 meter wide RoPax ferry with the IMO number 9741918 can transport 340 cars or 34 trucks as well as 1750 passengers and has a load capacity of 1685 tons. It has identical engine room and bridge systems at both ends of the ship and has a nominal speed of 15.4 knots .

The Texelstroom is a hybrid- powered ferry. The drive system is fed from a combination of solar energy and energy from biodiesel and liquefied natural gas . With solar modules installed on deck , which have a collector area of around 700 square meters, sunlight is converted into electrical energy and stored in lithium-ion batteries . A total of 252 48-V lithium-ion modules of the AT6500 series with a storage capacity of 1.6 MWh were installed by the Canadian company Corvus Energy . The dual-fuel motors (alternating motors) driving the generators are operated with either MDO or liquefied natural gas as fuel. With an energy management system, the electrical energy is distributed to the consumers (electric drive motors, bow / stern thrusters, winches, restaurant operation and lighting, ship auxiliary systems consisting of pumps, fans and compressors) in such a way that the diesel motors for the generator drive run as efficiently as possible.

Corvus Energy 's energy storage system (ESS), approved by Lloyd's Register , made it possible to install smaller diesel generators , as the power consumption peaks caused by the side radiators and winch operation upon departure and arrival of the ship are cut off by the use of the battery. The system was designed in such a way that the ferry can be operated independently in an emergency with the electrical energy stored in the batteries.

After 3 years of operation, emission data was published showing the emission reduction. Compared to the shipping company's existing ship Doktor Wagemaker , there were 53% less nitrogen oxides, 43% less soot and 15% less CO 2 in operation . One less motor is required during operation, as the batteries are used to store not only solar power, but also green shore power. This enables the ferry to save around 20% fuel per vehicle transferred.
