The Schulpengat was a double-ended ferry operated by the Dutch shipping company Texels Eigen Stoomboot Onderneming (TESO).

history

The ship was built under construction number 1012 on the Verolme Scheepswerf in Heusden . The keel was laid on July 27, 1989, the launch on July 28, 1990. The ferry was built at the shipyard up to and including the vehicle decks. With the superstructure above , the ship would not have fit under the bridges below the shipyard. In October 1990 the ferry was towed to Dordrecht . There, the superstructures above the vehicle decks, which had been prefabricated on land at the shipyard, were placed on the hull and the ship was completed in December 1990 and delivered to the shipping company. The construction costs amounted to around 70 million guilders . The design of the ship came from the Bureau voor Scheepsbouw in Bloemendaal .

The ship was put into service on February 18, 1991 and used by Texel's own Stoomboot Onderneming in the ferry service between Den Helder and 't Horntje on Texel . It replaced the Molengat , the first TESO ferry with two vehicle decks, which from then on served as a replacement ship and to provide support in the event of heavy traffic. In 2005 the Schulpengat was replaced by the new Dokter Wagemaker , but remained in service as a replacement ship and to provide support in times of high traffic. After the Texelstroom went into operation in 2016, the ferry was launched and only occasionally used as a reserve. In January 2018 it was finally decommissioned after it last operated between 't Horntje and Den Helder on January 21st.

The attempt to sell the ship to another shipping company was unsuccessful. In September 2018 the ship was sold to Galloo in Ghent for scrapping and scrapped in late 2018 / early 2019. One of the two wheelhouses is to be exhibited in the Kaap Skil Museum in Oudeschild on the island of Texel, which has an exhibition about TESO and is planning to expand this exhibition.

The ship was named after a maritime channel between Den Helder and the island of Texel as part of the Marsdiep .

Technical data and equipment

The drive of the ferry was diesel electrically by four Voith-Schneider propeller , of two Holec electric motors (type: WK 124 / HB-04), each with 625  kW power were driven. For electricity generation were five Caterpillar - diesel engines (type: 3606 DI TA), each with 1,600 kW of power available, the five Holec generators (type: DGSS560 s 6), each with 1,625  kVA apparent power drives. In ferry operations, four of the generator sets were usually used to generate electricity.

The ship had two vehicle decks with a total of 1065  gauge meters . The vehicle decks consisted of a central area with four car lanes each and a lateral lane on each side of the ferry. A total of 1308 m² was available on the lower vehicle deck. Trucks could also be transported in the middle area of the lower vehicle deck. For this purpose, 907 m² were available on three lanes with 288 lane meters or four lanes for cars with 278 lane meters. The usable height of the lower vehicle deck was 4.4 m in the middle area and 2.6 m in the area of the two side lanes.

A total of 1254 m² was available on the upper vehicle deck for the transport of cars. The usable height of the deck was 2.9 m, the maximum axle load 2.6 t.

There was space for 242 cars on the vehicle decks. The ferry could carry 1750 passengers. The ship's carrying capacity was 1215 t. The vehicle decks were accessible on land via height-adjustable ramps.

Above the vehicle decks there was a deck with the facilities for the passengers as well as a wheelhouse arranged above at both ends.
