from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

To the South is a song by the band Lift that was released in 1978. The composer is Wolfgang Scheffler , the text is by Henry Pacholski , both band members at the time. The text was sometimes interpreted as an expression of longing for freedom of travel .

history

In early 1978, Lift played with the line-up Gerhard Zachar (e-bass, background vocals), Henry Pacholski (vocals), Wolfgang Scheffler (keyboard), Michael Heubach (keyboard, background vocals), Frank-Endrik Moll (drums) and Till Patzer (alto saxophone, Flute and background vocals).

The song was recorded by the producer Luise Mirsch for radio in the GDR . It was ranked 28th in the GDR annual hit parade in 1978 and 23rd in 1979. One single was not released; the piece did not appear on the long-playing record Meeresfahrt until 1979 . Pacholski and Zachar had already died in a traffic accident in November 1978.

description

The song consists of the prelude, two stanzas of eight lines each, the twice sung refrain with seven lines, an interlude and the epilogue. The calm, song-like piece is characterized by the use of keyboards and Pacholski's expressive singing. Drums and bass are cautious, the flute has occasional inserts in the verses. Most of the chorus is sung in a choir, Pacholski only sings the last, repeated word “to break away” alone. The piece is in a minor key .

The singer reports from his childhood. At that time he wondered why the birds move south when it gets cold. After his father explained to him that they were fleeing from snow and ice, he wanted to do the same. But “not far behind the house” “the first snow was already falling”.
