The Dokter Wagemaker is a double-ended ferry operated by the Dutch shipping company Texels Eigen Stoomboot Onderneming (TESO).

history

The ship was built by the Damen Shipyards Group . The construction should cost 36.3 million euros. Adjustments and changes during the construction phase made the ship more expensive in the end. The design of the ship came from the Bureau voor Scheepsbouw in Bloemendaal .

The hull was built at the Damen Galati Shipyard in Romania . The keel was laid on December 17, 2003, the launch on November 26, 2004. In January / February 2005, the hull was towed to the Koninklijke Schelde Groep in Vlissingen , which also belongs to Damen Shipyards, for completion and final equipment .

The ship was christened on July 1, 2005 in 't Horntje on Texel . Godmother was a granddaughter of the Texel doctor and founder of Texel's own Stoomboot Onderneming, Adriaan Wagemaker, who gave the ship its name. The ship was handed over to TESO on September 5, 2005 - around three months late (delivery was originally planned for June 1, 2005) - and has been in service between Den Helder and 't Horntje since mid-September of that year , where it replaced the Schulpengat . For the use of the ship, the jetties in Den Helder and 't Horntje had to be adapted and widened. In September 2016, the Dokter Wagemaker was replaced by the new Texelstroom , but remains in service as a replacement ship and to provide support in times of high traffic.

Technical data and equipment

The propulsion of the ship takes place diesel electrically by four electrically driven propeller nacelles , each with 1800  kW power . For electricity generation are four ABB generators are available which of four six-cylinder - diesel engines of the manufacturer Caterpillar (type: 3608 DI-TA) are driven with a total 11,440 kW. In addition, a harbor and emergency generator with 375 kVA apparent power is available.

The drive has a redundant structure. The generators and drive motors are housed in two separate machine rooms. Original plans with alternative drive concepts (use of solar or wind power for energy generation, LNG or biodiesel ) were discarded and only implemented with the successor ferry.

The ship is fastened to the berths in the two ferry ports with magnets. This saves the time for deploying and pulling in the mooring lines during mooring and casting off maneuvers.

The ship has two vehicle decks, each with 704  lane meters . The vehicle decks consist of a central area and a side lane on each side of the ferry. On the lower vehicle deck, there are five car and four truck lanes in the middle area. There is space for around 300 cars on the vehicle decks. There is space for 30 trucks in the truck lanes. The car capacity will then be reduced to 200 vehicles. The maximum axle load is 20 t on the lower vehicle deck and 1.75 t on the upper vehicle deck. The usable height on the upper vehicle deck is 3.1 m. The ferry can carry 1750 passengers. The load capacity of the ship is 1840 t. The vehicle decks can be reached via height-adjustable ramps on land.

Above the vehicle deck there is a deck with the facilities for the passengers and an atrium with a glass roof. The passenger deck is provided with a circumferential promenade deck. Above the passenger deck there is a wheelhouse arranged above at both ends .
