The 5th Supernova took place on February 16, 2019 and was the Latvian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv ( Israel ). The Latvian indie pop band Carousel won the competition with their song That Night .
format
concept
On December 5, 2018, LTV announced that a total of 16 participants, five fewer than in the previous year, will take part. There should be a total of two semi-finals with eight participants each. The four best participants qualify for the final, so that a total of eight participants will compete in the final. The winner should again be decided 50% by televoting and 50% by jury voting.
Choice of contribution
From September 3, 2018 to October 21, 2018, contributions could be submitted to LTV. The station announced that they are looking for a radio hit . The age limit has also been reduced from 18 to 16 years. Singers, producers and composers from all over the world could apply again, but the focus is on Latvian artists. Also, only professionally produced songs may now be submitted. Demos may be ignored.
On October 22, 2018, LTV announced that they had received a total of 83 songs, ten fewer than the previous year .
Attendees
A second round of auditions took place on November 22nd. A total of 33 artists performed here who have made it to this point. The respective appearances were put online by LTV and, as in 2018, could be rated by fans. Voting was possible with For (German: for), Against (German: against) and Reserve (German: reserved). The voting ran from November 26, 2018 to November 30, 2018 11:00 a.m. ( CEST ). The vote did not take any result on the semi-finalists. The result should ultimately only help the jury to select the semi-finalists.
On December 5, 2018, LTV then presented the 16 participants of the Supernova 2019. Among them are some returnees like Markus Riva. In 2019 he will take part in the show for the fifth time, which means he will take part in every issue. Samanta Tīna also took part in the Supernova in 2016, but also took part in the Latvian preliminary decision Dziesma in 2012, 2013 and 2014 .

The final took place on February 16, 2019. Eight participants took part. Markus Riva won the audience voting , consisting of a televoting, an internet vote , a Spotify vote and a vote in the Alfa shopping center . The band Carousel won the jury voting and came second in the audience voting. This was enough to win the Latvian preliminary decision.
