format
concept
With the confirmation of Malta's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018, it was announced at the same time that the MESC will again serve as the preliminary decision. The concept corresponds to the preliminary decision from last year after the semifinals were canceled. In 2018 there was again a final with 16 participants, where for the first time the winner was determined by 50% televoting and 50% jury voting.
Choice of contribution
Contributions could be submitted from July 7th to September 1st, 2017. However, each participant had to pay 150 euros as a participation fee. A total of 129 contributions were received by TVM, which then go through three further phases. In the first phase, the 129 contributions were reduced to 60 contributions. These were determined by local juries. In the second phase, the 60 contributions were reduced to 30 contributions. These 30 contributions were determined by local and international juries. On September 15, TVM presented the list with the 30 articles, which have now been reduced to 16 articles in the third and final phase.
Attendees
On October 11th, TVM announced the 16 finalists, who were determined internally by a jury. Among them were returnees to the MESC. Brooke Borg tried to represent Malta in 2016 and 2017, Christabelle Borg tried to do so in 2015 and 2016. Deborah C also tried to win the competition on the seventh attempt. But Danica Muscat and Lawrence Gray have also tried several times to represent Malta at the ESC. Best known of all was Richard Micallef, who represented Malta at the ESC in 2014 as part of the band Firelight .
