AWS (short for Alternative Wine Selection ) is a Founded in 2006 Hungarian Metal - / post-hardcore - band .
history
AWS was founded in 2006 by Bence Brucker, Dániel Kökényes, Örs Siklósi and Áron Veress in Budakeszi , a municipality west of Budapest . At that time the musicians were still going to school.
By 2017 the band had released three albums and one EP. AWS played in several European countries including Slovenia , Austria , Romania and the United Kingdom . In 2010 the band played on the Sziget . The release of the fourth studio album is planned for the end of 2018.
In 2018 she won the A Dal Festival with the title Viszlát nyár and represented her home country in May 2018 at the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon. On May 10, 2018, the group started in the second semi-final and reached the final with their contribution, which took place two days later. The group owes its progress to the organizers of the Wacken Open Air , who asked the metal fans to vote for the band. In fact, AWS made it into the finals mainly through televoting. The group landed in their semifinals in tenth place, just four points ahead of Romanian participant The Humans . In the final, the group received a total of 93 points, which corresponds to the 21st place out of 26 participants. There, too, it was thanks to the audience not to have done worse.
After the Eurovision Song Contest, AWS performed at Wacken Open Air on August 3, 2018 . On October 1, 2018, the band released Fekete részem, the fourth studio album of their career. On September 27, 2018, AWS played an Unplugged concert at the Madách Theater in Budapest as part of their tour through Hungary . This was recorded and will be released on CD and DVD in 2018 under the title Madách . The band plans to release an EP with five tracks from their fourth studio album with English lyrics.
style
In an interview with the Budapest newspaper , the musicians stated that they had already come into contact with rock and metal music when they were young . Among them were groups like Nirvana , Metallica and various Hungarian bands. In addition to these, the musicians groups such as Pantera , System of a Down , Korn , Linkin Park , as well as the Hungarian music groups Superbutt , Subscribe and Isten Háta Mögött are among the musical influences.
On the debut album Fata Morgana from 2011, the lyrics are mostly in English , but with the release of the second album Égésföld three years later , the musicians decided to write their lyrics in Hungarian . For the first album, the lyrics were first written in Hungarian and then translated. The lyrics are about personal experiences of the band members, but also social and economic issues are referred to in the lyrics.
The music is said to have catchy melodies, a clear characteristic of the country, good vocal harmonies and a decent groove that removes the emo color from the sound . Some songs are referred to as modern metal suitable for the masses.
Band name
AWS is an abbreviation and stands for Alternative Wine Selection . In several interviews during the Eurovision Song Contest in which the group took part, the abbreviation was jokingly translated as Ants With Slippers and later as Aron Went Shopping . Jim Shelley of the British Daily Mail ironically spelled Anti White Sheeps .
