Fekete részem ( Hungarian for My Darkest Part ) is the title of the fourth studio album by the Hungarian post-hardcore band AWS , which was released on October 1, 2018 via EDGE Records .

It houses thirteen tracks, including the song Viszlát nyár and its acoustic version as bonus material. The playing time of the album is 45 minutes and 50 seconds.

It entered the Hungarian music charts at number two and stayed in the top 40 for a total of three weeks.

Background and publication

The recordings for the album started in the first quarter of 2018. The album was recorded , mixed and mastered by guitarist Bence Brucker . The only exception is the song Éjfély lány , a cover version of the song of the same name by the Hungarian metal band Ossian from the 1990 album A rock katonái , which was recorded by Dániel Kiss in Y Sound Studio . In an interview with Kaposvár Most , singer Örs Siklósi explained that thanks to their success at the Eurovision Song Contest , the group are now able to write radio-friendly songs. Still, he announced that the album would be a lot heavier.

The album cover was penned by Kokái Barnabás from Barber's Art.

The album was officially announced on September 19, 2018.

Themes

On Fekete részem the musicians write about personal experiences, feelings and opinions. This is common in music, especially in metal . In an interview with the Hungarian radio station Kaposvár Most , singer Örs Siklósi said:

"Ha van valamiproblemémád azt ki kell írnod magadból, mert én hiszek abban, hogy ha elénekled és elüvöltözöd a bajaidat, akkor onnantól kezdve sokkal konnyebben tudsz érvényesülni az énzedétben job."

- Interview with Örs Siklósi

"If you have a problem, you have to write about yourself, because I believe that if you sing about your wounds and rub them, you can be much more effective in life and, in retrospect, you feel much more comfortable in everyday life."

- free translation

For example, the very gloomy and seemingly hopeless X / 0 takes up the difficulties in dealing with mental disorders, in this case depression . Lakatlan ember describes an average person who is helpless and empty, which is why he hates his life and is therefore unable to get a grip on it and improve his situation.

Hol voltál was inspired by a robbery against Siklósi's grandfather. The piece picks up on absent or indifferent parents, lovers and friends who, because of their own selfishness, turn their backs on loved ones. In Éjjeli tánc the singer sings about human sexuality . In the song foot! will be sung about the constant need to function in company. Vigyázz rám describes the emotional relationship with the mother, which is probably the purest and most beautiful interpersonal relationship. The song Menédek is based on the work Nachtasyl by the Russian writer Maxim Gorki and describes a place for people who live on the edge of society and find a home in it.

The piece Viszlát nyár , which is also included as bonus material on the album , takes up the subject of death and describes how singer Örs Siklósi dealt with the loss of his father in the summer. Part of the story is told from the father's perspective.

Publications

The first single Hol voltál (German about “Where were you?” Or “Where were you?” ) Was released in the summer together with a specially shot music video . With the album announcement on September 19, 2018, another single was presented with X / 0 .

The album itself was released as a phonogram on October 1, 2018 , before the album was released digitally on October 12 . Three days after the physical release of the album, the title song, Fekete részem , was the third single with a music video. Péter Tokay was hired as a director by Pixel Films .

On November 5, 2018, a music video was also released for the song Lakatlan ember .

Reviews

On Kulturpart.hu , critic Dániel Hári writes that the band's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest has given the band an enormous increase in popularity and increased media coverage. Hári describes Fekete részem as the band's best technically mature album to date, offering a broad musical and thematic range.

The piece Viszlát nyár , also included on the album , was received as part of the Eurovision Song Contest in May. Felix Bayer of Spiegel Online described the song as a modern metal song with hardcore influences and an “official refrain”, which you don't have to speak Hungarian to roar along with. Alex Robert Ross from Vice drew musical comparisons to the US band Atreyu especially in this song .

Mike Barnabás wrote compared the use of synthesizers with the newer works by Evanescence and ascribes a broad musical spectrum to the group, which lies between metalcore and gothic rock . Éjjely tánc is described as a song with radio hit potential, while the following track is described as a solid rock song. All in all , Fekete részem is described as a solid and honest album that builds on the foundations of Metalcore and yet experiments with other styles of music. The small, hopeful phases in a rather dark album are positively praised, the production is rough and yet of high quality.

Remarks

1The website of the official Hungarian music charts does not have an artist archive, but an archive for the entire chart lists. This means that the entire whereabouts must be researched manually in the chart archive.
