Mayra Andrade (born February 13, 1985 in Havana , Cuba ) is a Cape Verdean singer.

Life

Born in Cuba to Cape Verdean parents, she moved to Cape Verde, then Senegal , Angola , Germany and finally Paris , France . On her debut album Navega, which won the German Record Critics' Prize in 2007 , she sings mainly in Cape Verdean Creole . Their music converts between Latin and jazz, she combines this Brazilian influences (Tunuka) with Flamenco (Lapidu na bo) intercepts with songs like Dispidida and Navega also the characteristic melancholy of traditional Cape Verdean music, which often with the Portuguese Fado is compared . In addition to Cesária Évora , Sara Tavares and Lura , Mayra Andrade is now one of the most famous singers of the small archipelago and former colony of Portugal . At the age of 16, she won the gold medal for best singer at the Jeux de la Francophonie, an international competition in Canada in 2001 . In 2005 she recorded a duet with Charles Aznavour .

In 2008, Mayra Andrade received the BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music in the Newcomer category for her album Navega and the Cubadisco International Award from the Cuban music industry .

In 2010 she made her debut as an actress in the short film Das Rauschen des Meeres directed by Ana R. Fernandes.

Mayra Andrade also recorded several times in Brazil, some parts of her albums Stória, stória ... (2009) and Lovely Difficult (2013). Especially since the album Manga (2018/2019) and collaborations such as the duet with the Brazilian rapper Tulio Dek 2018, her fame has increased in Brazil.
