Moderation

The 28th Söngvakeppnin 2018 took place from February 10th, 2018 to March 3rd, 2018. It was the Icelandic preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon ( Portugal ). The winner of the competition was Ari Ólafsson with the song Our Choice , sung in English .

format

concept

The show consists of three programs: two semi-finals and a final. Six participants compete against each other with their songs in the semi-finals. These must all be presented in Icelandic . Three of them each qualify for the final, which is decided solely by the televoting. In addition, a wildcard will be selected after the two semi-finals. This is determined internally by the television station and comes from one of the two semi-finals. In the final, the six qualifiers from the two semi-finals will then compete against each other. There the interpreters can decide for themselves whether they sing in Icelandic or English. Which two of the finalists make it to the golden final is decided 50% by televoting and 50% by a jury. In the golden final , two participants then compete against each other. As in the semi-finals, the result will be 100% decided by the televoting. The one who receives the most votes wins the preliminary round and will present Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon.

Choice of contribution

From September 6 to October 20, 2017, interested artists could submit their contribution to the television station. The twelve participants were selected by a jury.

Attendees

On January 19, 2018, the Icelandic broadcaster RÚV officially presented all twelve participants. Among them were some returning participants. Aron Hannes only took part in the Söngvakeppnin in 2017 . Rakel Pálsdóttir also participated in 2015 as a member of the band Hinemoa and in 2017 together with Arnar Jónsson as a duo. Stefanía Svavarsdóttir already participated in 2013 together with Jógvan Hansen and in 2015 as a solo singer. Almost all of the songs were submitted in an English and an Icelandic version, although the lyrics are different. Only the band Heimilistónar did not submit an English version of their song.
