The Laugardalshöll (also: Laugardallshöllin , or more precisely Íþróttahöllin í Laugardal ; dt. The sports hall in Laugardal ) is a sports and event hall in the Icelandic capital Reykjavík .
history
The hall has an area of around 6,500 m² and seats around 5,500 spectators. Including standing room, the hall even offers a maximum capacity for up to 10,000 spectators. When it was inaugurated on December 6, 1965, it was the largest event hall in Iceland, but was promptly replaced by the Egilshöll . In addition to sporting events, exhibitions and music concerts are also held here. In 1972 Bobby Fischer won the title of world chess champion against Boris Spasski in this arena . The arena is Iceland's largest event venue for concerts and festivals by popular artists. In 1995 the handball world championship also took place here in Laugardalshöllin. The Söngvakeppnín - the Icelandic preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest - has also been held here every year since 2015 .
In mid-2017, a renovation and expansion of the hall was planned, but this was rejected for cost reasons.
