The 29th Söngvakeppnin 2019 took place on March 2, 2019 in Laugardalshöllin in Reykjavík and was the Icelandic preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv ( Israel ). The producing and broadcasting television broadcaster was the Icelandic broadcaster RÚV .

format

concept

On September 13, 2018, the public service broadcaster Ríkisútvarpið (RÚV) confirmed its participation in the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest.

For 2019, the station announced some changes to the concept. Instead of the case since 2015, there will be only ten participants in 2019 for the first time since 2014 . These are divided into two semi-finals, with five participants each. The interpreters then have to present their song in Icelandic . Two of the five participants each qualify for the final, with the result of the semi-finals being determined for the first time by 50% by jury voting and 50% by televoting. RÚV also retains the right to award a wildcard for the final. So there will be between four and five participants in the final. There, the interpreters will have free choice of language and there will then be two voting rounds. In the first round, 50% by televoting and 50% by a ten-person international jury appointed for the first time, two songs were determined for the super final. In the second round, the audience then determined the placements, although the votes from the televoting from the first round are included in the final result. There it will be decided who will represent Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2019.

The British choreographer Lee Proud was also contacted as Artistic Director for Söngvakeppnin 2019. The musical director of the preliminary round is Samuel Jón Samúelsson.

Choice of contribution

From September 13, 2018 to October 22, 2018, contributions could be submitted to the television station. For the first time in 2019, the television station invited successful Icelandic composers to write a song for the preliminary round. There was also a songwriting camp , where interested Icelandic songwriters wrote extra songs for the preliminary round.

On October 25, 2018, RÚV announced that the station had received 132 reports. A seven-person jury consisting of members of the Association for Icelandic Sound Artists, Icelandic Songwriters and Composers as well as members of RÚV then decided on the ten entries for the preliminary decision.

The ten participants were presented on January 26, 2019.
