Hatrið mun sigra ( Icelandic for hate will win ) is a song by the Icelandic band Hatari and the country's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv , Israel . The song was voted third in the first semi-final on May 14, 2019 and qualified for the final on May 18, 2019, where it reached tenth place with 234 points.

Music and lyrics

It is in Hatrið mun SIGRA an electronically played song . In it, the band criticizes "neoliberal hypercapitalism". In the Icelandic text it is translated: "Hate will win / Joy comes to an end / Because it is an illusion / A disappointing illusion". Elsewhere it is sung: "Europe will collapse / web of lies / rises from the ashes / united into one". It is the first song in Icelandic since 2013 at the Eurovision Song Contest .

Publication and reception

The song was released as a single on February 1, 2019. The group won the Söngvakeppnin 2019 preliminary round with him on March 2, 2019 . In the same month the single reached number one on the Icelandic charts. The ARD wrote that the musicians reflected in their artistic performances hope and hopelessness, power and oppression and individualism by uncovering contradictions.

Eurovision Song Contest

The song was performed in 13th position out of 17 participants during the first semifinals on May 14, 2019 and qualified for the final with third place and 221 points, 70 from the jury and 151 from the audience.
