Pierre Francastel

Pierre Francastel (born June 8, 1900 in Paris ; † January 2, 1970 there ) was a French art historian and university professor .

Life

Pierre Francastel first studied literature at the Sorbonne under the Hellenist Paul Mazon (1874–1955). From 1925 he worked in the conservation department at Versailles . In 1930 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the sculptures of Versailles, previously he had already published a catalog raisonné on the artist François Girardon . In the same year Pierre Francastel became director of the Institut français in Warsaw.

In 1936 he became a professor at the University of Strasbourg and there he began to deal with sociological aspects of art production. When the university moved to Clermont-Ferrand in 1939 , he lectured there in 1941 on L'histoire de l'art instrument de la propagande germanique . From 1943 he was a member of the Resistance .

In 1948, Pierre Francastel was appointed to the chair of art sociology at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales , newly created by Lucien Febvre . One of his students was Nikos Chatzēnikolau .
