The 56th Melodi Grand Prix 2018 took place on March 10, 2018 in Oslo Spektrum and was the Norwegian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in Lisbon ( Portugal ). Alexander Rybak won with the song That's How You Write A Song .

format

concept

In line with the change made in 2017, a final with three rounds will also be held in 2018. All ten participants will be evaluated in the first voting round by 50% international jury voting and 50% televoting. The four best participants with the most votes from the first round then compete against each other again in the second round, the so-called gold final . Only the audience determines the two finalists for the gold duel . The winner of the show and the interpreter, who will represent Norway at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018, will then also be determined exclusively by televoting.

Choice of contribution

From January 31, 2017 to September 10, 2017, composers had the opportunity to submit a contribution to the Norwegian television network NRK. Norwegian and foreign composers were allowed to submit contributions. However, NRK will prefer to select Norwegian composers. A total of 1200 contributions were submitted to NRK by the deadline. Compared to the previous year, 200 more entries were submitted, setting a new record. The new producer and music director of the Melodi Grand Prix Stig Karlsen selected the ten participants.

Attendees

On January 15, 2018, NRK presented all ten participants in the preliminary decision at a press conference. Among them were three former Norwegian ESC representatives: Alexander Rybak , who won the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 for Norway , Stella Mwangi , who represented Norway in 2011 in Düsseldorf , and Aleksander Walmann , who represented Norway in 2017 together with Joakim With Steen . The latter also returns as a composer, as does Kjetil Mørland , who represented Norway in 2015 .
