format

concept

For the fourth time in a row, the Melodi Grand Prix, hosted by the state broadcasting company Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK), consisted of three semi-finals and the program Siste Sjansen . A total of 21 interpreters and their contributions took part in the preliminary round. More than ever before. Seven performers took part in each semi-final, of which the top two qualified directly for the final. Those performers who landed in third and fourth place were given a starting place in the Sjansen Siste. In addition, NRK selected two other performers who were also allowed to participate in this program. These eight performers competed in duels over two rounds. In the end, two entries qualified for the final with eight performers. NRK produced the Melodi Grand Prix 2009 in collaboration with the production company Dinamo Story. According to producer Stian Malme, the aim was to make the competition bigger, more professional and more popular.

Choice of contribution

According to NRK, a total of 350 potential contributions were submitted. 50 percent of the contribution had to be written by composers and lyricists with Norwegian citizenship.
