The 49th Melodi Grand Prix took place from January 15 to February 12, 2011. It served to find the Norwegian contribution to the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf . After three semi-finals, a second chance round and the grand finale, the singer Stella Mwangi emerged as the winner with her title Haba Haba .
format
For the Melodi Grand Prix 2011 , the system from previous years was retained. From three semi-finals with seven contributions each, the two songs with the most votes qualify for the grand finale after a telephone vote. Third and fourth places receive a place in the second chance round (Norwegian Siste Sjansen ). The two fifth-placed songs that achieve the highest percentage of votes receive a place in the second-chance round. This is structured according to the knockout system . The eight participants will be divided into four duels. The winners move on to the second round, in which the two final qualifiers emerge from two duels.
In the final, the audience will first determine the four most popular contributions that will make it to the superfinal. The vote in the superfinal is - unlike in the preliminary rounds - divided. In addition to the telephone rating, which is divided into two regions ( Northern , Western and Southern Norway as well as Eastern Norway and Trøndelag ), the audience in the Oslo Spectrum and four regional juries also vote . These are located in the four venues of the semifinals and the Siste Sjansen and can award the points 2,000, 4,000, 6,000, 8,000.
Contributions could be submitted until September 15, 2010; there were 700 entries in total. The first nine songs were announced at a press conference on November 22, 2010, and the remaining twelve a week later.

Eurovision Song Contest
Since Norway was not part of the Big Five (those countries with the highest financial contribution to the competition, i.e. Germany , France , Italy , Spain and the United Kingdom ) nor the host of the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest , it first had to qualify through one of the semi-finals . Stella Mwangi thus appeared in starting position 02 in the first semi-final. She was supported by two dancers and three background singers.
In the competition, Mwangi and Haba Haba only reached 17th place with 30 points in the first semifinals, so they dropped out quite clearly. This is due to the national juries, the result of which flows 50% into the overall result of a country. Here she also reached 17th place, while she would have qualified with ninth place in the audience. Before the competition, Mwangi was one of the favorites for the overall victory, so the end in the semi-finals came as a surprise. Haba Haba was the first entry in the Eurovision Song Contest to contain text in Swahili .
