The 58th Melodi Grand Prix took place between January 11th and February 15th, 2020 and was the Norwegian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam ( Netherlands ). With a total of six broadcasts, it was the most extensive edition of the Melodi Grand Prix to date. As in every year, the broadcasting station was the NRK1 . Ulrikke Brandstorp won the competition with her contribution Attention .
format
concept
On November 5, 2018, the state broadcasting company Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK) was the first broadcasting company to confirm its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020.
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Melodi Grand Prix in 2020, the preliminary decision was extended to a total of six rounds with five semi-finals. This is the first time since 2014 that semi-finals have taken place. A total of 25 participants took part in the Melodi Grand Prix 2020. 20 participants were divided into a total of five semi-finals, so that four performers from the five regions of Norway (Northern Norway, Central Norway, Western Norway, Eastern Norway and Southern Norway) took part in each semi-final. These competed against each other in two duels, so that in a final duel (gold duel) the winner of the semi-finals was determined, who thus qualified for the final. The semi-finals took place in Bærum, but the regions were integrated into the broadcast via clips and live broadcasts. The semifinals should allow more and more diverse artists and their music to be presented. In the final in Trondheim, the five qualified performers met five performers selected in advance by a jury. Each of these five performers presented their song in one of the five semi-finals, so that each interpreter appeared equally often.
Earlier media reports mentioned 40 or 30 participants. They would also have been divided into a total of five semi-finals, so that eight or five performers would have participated in each semi-final. These different numbers emerged from various media reports, according to which either ten candidates took part in the final who would have qualified through the semi-finals, or five performers from the semi-finals would have met five candidates who had already been placed.
The viewers could use the NRK app or the NRK website to assign emojis (thumbs-up emoji, a heart and a dissatisfied emoji) after each performance by the artists. The winners of the semi-finals and the final were only determined by the spectators. The SMS voting and the international jury, which were introduced at the Melodi Grand Prix 2017, were thus abolished. Stig Karlsen justified this decision with the fact that NRK had already selected five finalists in advance by a jury. The Norwegian television audience should at least be able to decide on their own in the semi-finals and finals.
In the first semi-final, users on Facebook reported problems during the first duel between Geirm and Lisa Børud. In the meantime it was not possible to vote for Geirmund. NRK decided, despite the known problem, to accept the voting result as valid. Producer Stig Karlsen admitted that the audience was not expected to be so engaged. For the second semifinals, he promised improvements and announced that he would double the technical capacity.
Choice of contribution
From March 2 to July 31, 2019, potential composers had the opportunity to submit a contribution to the NRK. Originally, the submission deadline was May 17, 2019. Compared to the previous year, at least one composer or producer must come from Norway this year. Each composer or producer could submit up to three songs. The closing date for entries has been postponed compared to the previous year in order to have more time to work with composers, producers and performers. According to delegation leader Stig Karlsen, the focus should be on quality and less on quantity. According to his information, 500 to 600 contributions were submitted to NRK.
broadcasts
The Melodi Grand Prix 2020 extends over six weeks. The semi-finals will be played in the H3 arena in Bærum , not far from the Norwegian capital Oslo . The final will take place in the Spektrum in Trondheim and therefore not in Oslo for the first time in 31 years. Most recently the competition took place in Stavanger outside Oslo.

final
The finals took place on February 15, 2020 at 7:50 p.m. ( CET ) in the Trondheim Spectrum ( Trondheim ) with a capacity of 8,000 . A total of ten performers took part. Five of these candidates qualified through the semi-finals, the remaining participants were selected in advance by a jury. The singer Ulrikke Brandstorp won the final with her song Attention . An average of 950,000 spectators followed the final. At its peak there were 1,098,000 spectators. In addition, 12,000 viewers followed the program on the streaming service NRK TV
As in the semifinals, voting took place via an online voting system on the NRK website or the NRK app. After the first voting phase, the four performers with the most votes from the online voting should have reached the gold final. Due to technical problems, however, an emergency jury consisting of 30 people had to be used in this voting round. The votes cast by the jury were reset, so that every interpreter had the same starting opportunities again. The technical problems were solved in the course of the broadcast, so that the online votes could be used again in the next phase. In the gold duel , the candidates with the most audience votes presented their song again. These were Kristin Husøy and Ulrikke Brandstorp . In both the gold final and the gold duel, each viewer had the opportunity to vote three times. When voting, the viewer had to indicate which of the five regions of Norway (Northern Norway, Central Norway, Western Norway, Eastern Norway and Southern Norway) they came from. Then five former participants of the Melodi Grand Prix announced the results from the respective regions.

criticism
The Dagbladet newspaper criticized the high proportion of foreign composers in the competition. At the entries published on January 6, 2020, only 13 out of 30 composers were Norwegians. Two contributions were made exclusively by Swedish and Canadian production teams, although the official rules state that at least one composer for each contribution must be Norwegian. Producer Stig Karlsen rejected the allegations and affirmed that there was a sufficiently large Norwegian "footprint" among the participants.
Following the coordination problems in the final, NRK was criticized for its approach to dealing with the problems. The four participants in the gold final were determined by a 30-member back-up jury, of whose existence the artists were not informed. Vibeke Fürst Haugen, the manager of NRK, admitted that the emojis given during the performances of the ten artists in the first round overloaded the voting system. After the appearances by Sondrey, Ulrikke Brandstorp and Liza Vassilieva, emojis were no longer displayed. Melodi Grand Prix producer, Stig Karlsen, commented on the incidents during the show the day after the final. Accordingly, the back-up jury voted on Friday based on the studio versions of the songs and not on the live performances during rehearsals. Karlsen defended the jury's efforts, adding that the jury consisted of 30 television viewers and not members with ties to the music industry. All participants were informed by the jury on January 10, 2020. The voting system went back into operation during the voting phase, but a new voting was no longer possible due to the excess length of the program that had already accumulated. The jury result and the votes received up to the voting problems tended to be similar. He therefore considers a new vote to be irrelevant. Also considering the fact that Ulrikke Brandstorp has long been considered the favorite of the finals and a re-vote would probably lead to the same final result. NRK promised a technical adjustment of the voting system so that problems can be avoided in the future.
