The 57th Melodi Grand Prix took place on March 2, 2019 at Oslo Spektrum and served to find the Norwegian entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv ( Israel ). As every year, the broadcasting station was the Norsk Rikskringkasting NRK1 . The band KEiiNO won the competition with their song Spirit in the Sky . They reached sixth place in the final in Tel Aviv, the best Norwegian result since 2013 .
format
concept
On January 31, 2018, the state broadcasting company Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK) confirmed its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 as the first country.
As in the previous year, a final with three rounds will also be held in 2019. All ten participants will be evaluated in the first voting round by 50% international jury voting and 50% televoting. The four best participants with the most votes from the first round then compete against each other again in the second round, the so-called gold final . Only the audience determines the two finalists for the gold duel . The winner will then be determined by televoting.
Moderation
On December 6, 2018, NRK announced that Kåre Magnus Bergh and Heidi Ruud Ellingsen will be taking over the 2019 moderation . For Kåre Magnus Bergh it was the fifth time in a row that he moderated the preliminary decision. Heidi Ruud Ellingsen made her debut as a presenter of the Melodi Grand Prix.
Choice of contribution
Since the window for submitting contributions is always open in Norway, contributions can be submitted to NRK at any time. However, the window for submitting contributions for 2019 closed on September 9, 2018.
On September 10, 2018, NRK announced that the station had received over 1,000 applications. The producer and music director of the Melodi Grand Prix Stig Karlsen selected four participants from these applications for the preliminary decision. Six other participants were selected directly by NRK to take part in the competition.
Attendees
The participants were presented at a press conference on January 25, 2019. 15-second preview clips with the songs of the participants were then posted on nrk.no/mgp .
Recurring performers
A number of performers returned to the competition in 2019.
