On June 3, 1946, Kjell Engman was born as the first son of the hairdresser Lennart Engman and his wife Märta. Education was difficult for him due to dyslexia and he concentrated on drawing, music and math.

After working for a time as a seller, Kjell Engman completed his training in 1973 at the Art Academy in Gothenburg and in the art school in Stockholm . During his studies he did a one-year internship at Kosta Boda and got to know Bertil Vallien during the semester on leave in Åfors . The managing director of Åfors Erik Rosén commissioned Engman with the design of a typical Swedish glass bowl. Engmans first object Rapsodi was a thick glass dish containing a Mitsommerstange shows and a dancing couple, working for more than 24 million Swedish kronor sold (equivalent to about 2.7 million euros).

Immediately after completing his studies, in 1978 he went to the glass manufacturer Kosta Boda as a glass designer. In 1981 he attended a class at the Pilchuck Art Center in Washington State . Kjell Engman designed utility glass and art glass objects for Kosta Boda in the Boda Glasbruk . His glass objects are characterized by strong colors and playful shapes. He often deals with the subject of water or chooses motifs from the animal and plant world. But brightly colored glass objects, masks and everyday objects such as musical instruments, shoes, clothes or bottles are also among his popular designs. In 2009 he set up his artistic studio in the Kosta Glasbruk .

In the last few decades he has staged extensive glass installations in unusual places, such as in power station caverns, in the old tobacco factory in Malmö or in a former shoe factory in Örebro . He designed windows and decorative objects made of colored glass for churches and public buildings.

Engman designed the glass cups for numerous competitions, such as for the Swedish edition of the dance show Let's dance or Stars on Ice . Engman has been designing the winners' trophy for the Eurovision Song Contest since 2008 , which is changed a little every year and provided with the lettering of the respective venue.

In addition to designing glass objects, Engman is also involved in sound installations. His father aroused his interest in music in his early years. He played in various rock bands and turned to jazz as a guest musician in the Wisperings Big Band in the late 1960s. He later composed electronic music with sophisticated sound and noise effects in his recording studio on Öland .

Today, Kjell Engman's glass objects can be found in numerous Swedish and international glass and art museums, including the Swedish Glass Museum in Växjö , the Swedish National Museum Stockholm , the Glass Museum in Ebeltoft , the Corning Museum of Glass and the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas .
