Mor ve Ötesi (German: "Violett and Jenseits", morötesi : "ultraviolet") is a Turkish rock band from Istanbul . They are one of the most famous modern bands in Turkey and represented the country at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 .

history

At the beginning of 1995 Kerem Kabadayı, Harun Tekin, Derin Esmer and Alper Tekin founded the band Mor ve Ötesi and recorded their first album in August of the same year. Consisting of own compositions, this album was released in June 1996 under the title Şehir . They gave their first concert outside of İstanbul in the Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi ( ODTÜ ; Middle East Technical University) in Ankara in 1997 . In the same year Alper Tekin left the group and Burak Güven joined the band for him. After the album Bırak Zaman Aksın was recorded in 1999 , Derin Esmer left the group and was replaced by Kerem Özyeğen. On December 16, 2000, Mor ve Ötesi performed as the opening act for Placebo at the Hilton Convention & Exhibition Center. They released their third album Gül Kendine ("Laugh about yourself") in late 2001. The first single Yaz, Yaz, Yaz became a big hit and caused a stir. The second single Güneye giderken ("On the way to the south") consolidated their position in the Turkish alternative music scene.

In 2003, she published together with other prominent Turkish artists (with Athena , Aylin Aslım , Bülent Ortaçgil, Feridun Düzağaç, Kozan, Koray Candemir, Vega and Nejat Yavaşoğulları) a protest song against the American attack on Iraq named Savaşa Hiç Gerek Yok (German "a It doesn't need war ”).

The year 2004 became the year of Mor ve Ötesi - thanks to their album release in spring ( Dünya Yalan Söylüyor (“The world is lying”)), his singles Cambaz (German: “Acrobat”), Bir Derdim Var (German: “Ich I have a worry ”) and Sevda Çiçeği (German:“ Love flower ”) were all awarded the“ Kral ”music prize. Büyük Düşler (Eng .: "Big Dreams") was published in 2006. The first single / maxi-CD was Şirket (Eng .: "company").

Harun Tekin, singer from Mor ve Ötesi

On February 15, 2008 Mor ve Ötesi presented their song Deli ("Crazy") to the audience on TRT television , with whom they represented Turkey at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest . Mor ve Ötesi had free choice of language from the official side (i.e. from the TRT side). They had decided to sing in Turkish in Belgrade. Mor ve Ötesi qualified in the 2nd semi-final on May 22, 2008 for the final two days later, where they finished seventh with 138 points. They had starting number 12 in the final and starting number 3 in the semifinals. The song appeared on the album Başıbozuk , which was also released in 2008.

In 2010 and 2012, two more albums by the band followed with Masumiyetin Ziyan Olmaz and Güneşi Beklerken . In 2016 the two compilations Kayıtlar and Kayıtlar 1996-2016 were released on a total of nine CDs. In 2019 the band recorded the album Canlı Senfonik / Aya İrini , in which they recorded some of their well-known songs together with the classic Avrasya Filarmoni Orkestrası under the direction of Orçun Orçunsel and the choir Magma Filarmoni Korosu.

Band name

  • Mor = violet
  • ve = and
  • Ötesi = further, beyond

Put together this gives the meaning "violet and beyond". Thus this is a play on words with regard to the Turkish word morötesi which means “ultraviolet”, the meaning of which could also be given as “beyond the violet”.
