Çetin Alp
Çetin Alp (born June 21, 1947 in Malatya ; † May 18, 2004 in Istanbul ; full name: Çetin Alp Küçükarslan) was a Turkish singer and participant in the Eurovision Song Contest 1983 in Munich .
Alp first took part in the Turkish preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1979 , in which he took 5th place. In 1983 Alp took part again in the preliminary round, which he won this time. With the composition Opera (de: Die Oper ) by Aysel Gürel and Buğra Uğur, Alp represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest 1983 in Munich, accompanied by the group The Short Waves . In Munich Alp and the representative of Spain, the flamenco singer Remedios Amaya , took the last two places with 0 points each.
Alp took part in the preliminary decision in 1983 at short notice. Buğra Uğur presented the finished composition to him and wanted Alp to take part in the singing competition. Aysel Gürel noticed Alp's operetta-like voice during rehearsals, and the idea of a text about opera music arose. After winning the preliminary round, there were protests from the population against the song, which Alp also attributed to his illegitimate relationship. Alp complained that the media never gave his successful placements in other music competitions (in the USA and Bulgaria) media coverage. For example, after finishing last at Eurovision in the Balkan Song Contest, he received the award for the best talent. But the image of the “loser of the Eurovision” as the singer of the “worst Eurovision song Opera ” could not be rid of all his life. In Turkey he was only mentioned in connection with Opera . Alp stated, however, that the Eurovision participants are forgotten in Turkey, but at least in this way he and Opera were never forgotten.
Alp died of a heart attack on May 18, 2004. He was found dead by his daughter that evening in his apartment in Istanbul's Kadıköy district . Alp suffered from heart problems for a long time.
Alp had a nine-year relationship with the famous actress Suna Yıldızoğlu, who lived in Turkey and lived in Turkey for nine years. Alp left a son and a daughter. The mother of his children was his former wife Şermin Küçükarslan.
