Athena is a Turkish ska-punk - band from Istanbul . The permanent band members are the twin brothers Gökhan and Hakan Özoğuz (born October 11, 1976 in Istanbul).

history

The twins Gökhan and Hakan Özoğuz started making music together in 1987. The first recordings were made with Punished Society in 1991, and their first unofficial album, One Last Breath , was released in 1993 . At that point, Athena was still playing Thrash Metal . Over the next few years , Athena covered many Ska pieces at her numerous concerts, which were very well received by the Turkish audience, although Ska was still very unknown in Turkey at that time. In 1998 Athena recorded the first regular album in the line-up with Gökhan as singer , Hakan as guitarist , Ozan Karaçuha as bassist and Turgay Gülaydın as drummer . It was called Holigan . On it is Ska-Punk with mostly Turkish, rarely English lyrics, spiced with oriental sounds and a touch of Oi! -Punk to hear. Some of the pieces, such as Tarlaya Ektim Soğan or Yaylanın Çimenine , are traditional Turkish songs arranged as ska punk songs. The song Devam… Boşver can also be found on the sampler United Colors of Ska Vol. 3 . With the next album Tam Zamanı Şimdi from 2001 Athena contributed a title as a support or encouragement song for the Turkish national basketball team , namely On İki Dev Adam .

In 2002 the third work followed, entitled Herşey Yolunda . As a representative of the host country, Athena represented Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest 2004 in Istanbul with the title For Real and took fourth place. For Real became the top 20 hit in Greece. A little later the album US appeared , which contains a Turkish version of the Eurovision contribution. In Germany, Athena was seen as a support act for the doctors in 2004 .

In 2005 the self-titled fifth Athena album was released. Athena is featured on the soundtrack of the PC game FIFA 2006 with the song Tam Zamanı Şimdi (German: 'Now is the right moment') . In 2006 the EP İT was released with five new titles. Among other things, the band covered the Nirvana classic Breed with its own Turkish lyrics and provided it with the new song title Köpek (Eng. 'Dog'). The following year Athena went to the Turkish football club Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the studio to record an EP entitled 100 Şerefli Yıl .

Gökhan has been a member of the jury for the Turkish casting show O Ses Türkiye since 2013 . Hakan has also been a member of the jury since 2015.

Personal

In February 2007 Athena announced a creative break after a concert in Amsterdam , as Gökhan Özoğuz would move to London for a few months for language training and his brother Hakan Özoğuz and Ozan Musluoğlu would begin their military service.
