The Technical University of the Middle East ( Turkish Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi , ODTÜ for short ) in Ankara is one of the most renowned and largest universities in Turkey . It is a university with English as the language of study. The official English name of the university is Middle East Technical University or METU for short . The university was founded in 1956.
The university campus includes a housing estate for professors (ODTÜ-Kent), a large forest, a swimming pool, a school and sports facilities. Free shuttle buses run within the premises, otherwise the university is connected to Ankara with the usual buses. A metro connection was planned for the end of 2006, but it was postponed indefinitely.
The ODTÜ / METU maintains two further campuses: one in Erdemli on the Turkish Mediterranean coast, which houses the University's Institute of Marine Sciences (English: METU Institute of Marine Sciences , Turkish: ODTÜ Deniz Bilimleri Enstitüsü ), and one in Güzelyurt in the Turkish Republic Northern Cyprus.
