Altuğ Taner Akçam (born October 23, 1953 in Ardahan ) is a Turkish historian , sociologist and author . He is one of the first Turkish academics to publicly address the genocide of the Armenians by the Ottomans in 1915 . Akçam has published the most detailed work to date on the Istanbul trials of 1919/1920 in the defeated Ottoman Empire . The majority of the work includes the trial minutes of the main hearing, translated from Ottoman , as they appeared in the Takvim-i Vekayi at the time, as well as newspaper reports on two side negotiations. Some of the translations are also by Hayrettin Aydın . Akçam is a former student of Vahakn Dadrian .

Career

Akçam studied administrative science and economics at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara . In the mid-1970s, Akçam supported a leading member of the militant group Dev Yol (Devrimci Yol Revolutionary Way) and the editor of Devrimci Genclik Dergisi (Revolutionary Youth Magazine). In 1976 he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. A year later he was able to escape from prison and emigrate to the Federal Republic of Germany. He continued his political activities. The murder of his friend Kürşat Timuroğlu by the Kurdistan Workers' Party was decisive for his academic career . Akçam worked at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research on the history of violence and torture in Turkey. He received his doctorate in 1995 from the University of Hanover . Akçam became Professor of History at Clark University , USA .

He has published numerous books and articles (in English , German and Turkish ) on Turkish-Armenian history.
